Morteratsch Glacier

[ Swiss horizontal ruler ]

[ View of the Morteratsch glacier ]

The Morteratsch glacier is a small, retrieving glacier at the end of a small valley along the bernina pass road. During the last ice-age, it was much bigger. On the left on the picture above, one can still see the once huge side moraine. Much of the ice is covered with dirt and debris, therefore the dark, gray color.

[ "Glacier door" - the exit of the melting water ]

This is a typical "glacier door", where the water of the melting ice exits the glacier. It flows below the ice of the glacier and forms a tiny lake at its end, the source of a small river.
