The "Library Werner Oechslin" is located at the eastern skirts of the town of Einsiedeln in the canton Schwyz, less than 300 meters away from the Abbey of Einsiedeln ("Kloster Einsiedeln"). The building was designed by the world famous Swiss architect Mario Botta. The library was opened on June 6, 2006. It hosts more than 50'000 books, including some very rare items. The collection was started by Werner Oechslin, professor for history of architecture and former head of the "Institute of History and Theory of Architecture" ("Institut für Geschichte und Theorie der Architektur", gta), which is part of the department for architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich for short).
The "Foundation Library Werner Oechslin" ("Stiftung Bibliothek Werner Oechslin") maintains a close relationship to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. The collection includes not only books about architecture and art history, but also about mathematics, physics, theology, history and astronomy. It is open to the public, but books must be viewed at the library, they do not lend books. For further details, please visit the library's website at www.bibliothek-oechslin.ch (the website is available in German and English).
